Up North Comfort Food

No one knows comfort food like a Midwesterner in the dead of winter. That's why on the Whitefish Chain, we've got food that warms your heart and soul after a long day of playing in the snow.

Every Tuesday, the Crosslake-Fifty Lakes American Legion (located in Crosslake) makes hot roast beef sandwiches that are delicious. For just $7 for a whole or $4 for a half, choose white or wheat bread piled with roast beef covered in dark, flavorful gravy. Next to it is mashed potatoes with more gravy and a vegetable on the side. It's hard to beat the tender roast beef over a thick slice of white bread with gravy on the top. Every night (except Sunday and Monday) the Legion serves a different menu item, always at a great price.

Up at the Bourbon Room, also in Crosslake, you'll find an entire section of the menu dedicated to different varieties of grilled cheese sandwiches. There's the five-way grilled cheese, with five different kinds of cheese; the sloppy Joe grilled cheese; the jalepeno popper grilled cheese, with jalapenos, cream cheese, pepper jack, chives and tomatoes; and more. All of them come with kettle chips and are crispy and golden.

Bites in Pine River has pot roast bites, an appetizer of pot roast on a baked potato slice with fried onion and gravy. You'll also find a pot roast sandwich on grilled ciabatta bread with onions and gravy, and burgers, pasta and wraps.

If your style of comfort food comes from your Italian heritage, head over to Maucieri's in Crosslake. Maucieri's makes all their pasta sauces in-house from the Italian owners' grandmother's recipes. They were voted the best pasta in the state by WCCO viewers, and it's because they've gained a following across the state. Every once in a while Maucieri's has a pasta bar where you can pick what type of pasta you'd like, what type of sauce and a meat. The restaurant also has great antipasti, with fresh deli meats, classic and exotic cheeses, and mixed olives and giardiniera. Your inner Italian will approve.

Lucky's in Pequot Lakes, in its Irish theme, has a shepherd's pie that's delicious. It's hamburger gravy with peas, carrots, corn and onions topped with mashed potatoes. Other Irish favorites include Reubens, chicken pot pie, beef stew and fish 'n chips. Lucky's also has hot turkey or hot beef sandwiches, meatloaf dinners, chili cheese dogs and mac and cheese.

If your idea of comfort food is burgers, we've got that covered too. Some of the best burger's you've ever had will be found right here around the chain. Try Billy's in Breezy Point, Lucky's, Bites, Riverside Inn in Crosslake, Andy's in Crosslake or the Bourbon Room.

There you have it. We've no shortage of rich and delicious food to keep you warm and full all winter long. You just can't beat it!
