Holiday fun keeps on coming at the Whitefish Chain

This weekend the Whitefish Chain has even more fun in store with continuing holiday events that are sure to bring cheer to even the scroogiest of hearts. Join the fun  in both Pequot Lakes and Pine River this Saturday, Dec. 9 for parades, Santa visits, bake sales, story time, fireworks and more.

Parades of lights will take place Dec.9 in Pequot Lakes and Pine River. This photo shows Pequot Lakes' parade. Photo via the Santa's Bobbin Into Town Facebook event page.

Pine River's annual parade of lights begins at 5 p.m. Dec. 9, rolling through town and, of course, down Barclay avenue. And while the fantastic parade is the main event, it's far from the only thing to do in Pine River that day.

Holiday open houses will be going at stores on all over town Saturday, and from noon to 2 p.m. enjoy a horse drawn carriage ride- pickup is at the American Legion. An indoor farmers' market will take place at the Warehouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Lunch With Santa will be at the American Legion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Pine River Public Library will also host a fundraiser that day, selling baked goods and mini cookbooks from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The sale is a great way to support the local library (plus you can say hello to Browser the Library Cat!).

Anyone can join the parade by entering lineup at 4 p.m. at First Lutheran Church- no pre-registration is required! Prizes will be handed out for best use of lights in the theme (this year's them is "Broadway Lights") and best use of lights.

After the parade, enjoy free cookies, cider and cocoa at the Pine River Information Center. A giant bonfire will be roaring outside where you and the family can join in the Christmas caroling. At 6:30 p.m., fireworks will fill the sky.

Pequot Lakes also plans an event-filled day Dec. 9. Beginning at 3 p.m., the Cole Memorial building will be host to Santa and Mrs. Claus with story time, Jingles the Elf, balloon animals and a magician. Find the Cole memorial building just below the iconic bobber water tower. It's a white building that is also home to the Pequot Lakes Historical Museum, which will have an open house in the lower level with displays, cider and cookies from 3-5 p.m.

From 4-6 p.m., Santa's reindeer will be hanging out in Trailside Park! You'll also find a bonfire with cocoa and s'mores plus festive singing hosted by the Ms. Pequot Lakes royalty. Free horse and wagon rides will be available, and kids can join in the Bobber Hunt!

Beginning at 4:30, the Hungry Loon Cafe in the Jack Pine Center will have it's dinner for kids for $4. Next door, PhotoJenic Photography will offer photos with Santa and candy canes.

The main event, the parade of lights, begins at 6 p.m. The parade starts on North Government Drive and turns left onto Main Street. There's no entry fee to join the Pequot Lakes parade; just call Barb Merritt for more info at 218-568-4695.

The days may be shorter, but you can count on these fun parades to light up the night and make the most of the holiday season!
