Promoting Fall Through Golf

For the 22nd year, the Whitefish Golf Club (7883 County Road 16, Pequot Lakes) is hosting the Whitefish Golf Scramble, a celebration of the sport of golf and the fall tourism season. The Whitefish Area Lodging Association sponsors the tournament, which was created by a group of resort owners as a fun way to promote fall travel.

The Whitefish Gold Club hosts the Whitefish Golf Scramble. A challenging 18 hole, par 72 layout, Whitefish provides a true northwoods experience. Heavily wooded and well manicured grounds combined with affordable rates make this a “must play” on anyone’s list.

Since those first years, this 2-day, 4-person tournament has grown to capacity — 144 players. Many golfers return year after year and tout this as their favorite fall golf getaway weekend.

Prizes and contests total for more than $10,000 in winnings. Most prizes are donated by the area lodging properties. Gift include everything from overnight stays to sweatshirts or other resort memorabilia.

Festivities begin on Friday night with practice rounds, followed by the start of the official event on Saturday and the grand finale' on Sunday. A fabulous Sunday brunch is also included.

Funds raised by this tournament support the lodging association's activities. In the early years, proceeds were used to promote the region. But since 1999, a 1% lodging tax is now collected and those funds support marketing efforts. The tax collection region includes the communities of Crosslake, Ideal Township, Jenkins and Jenkins Township.

Since most of the Lodging Association’s marketing efforts to expand exposure and awareness of the Whitefish Chain of Lakes Region occurs outside of the local market, activities within the region like this golf tournament help to create interest and word-of-mouth referrals from residents, seasonal residents and visiting friends and family members who golf.
