Smell the burning nitro, hear and feel the loud engines, and see the mind-boggling speed. Even if you're not a "car person," Whitefish Chain locals will tell you that a trip to Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) is a ton of fun and well worth the trip.
If you're unfamiliar, Brainerd International Raceway is located just a little ways south of the Whitefish Chain of Lakes and is known across the Midwest- and the country- for its racing lineup and events.
The biggest event of the year, which BIR is known for, is the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. According to the BIR webpage, the NHRA Nationals come to BIR every year in August and they bring the world's best drag racers piloting the fastest dragsters on the planet. That event just happens to be this weekend.
That's right, the "fastest show on Earth" is Aug. 16-19 boasting an "experience like no other." See blow-your-mind drag racing at speeds that you won't believe. Tickets are available for one day or for the entire weekend.
With 10,000 horsepower, Top Fuel Dragsters cover a quarter of a mile in less than four seconds, reaching speeds over 330 miles per hour. Last year records for the Top Fuel and Funny Car divisions were broken. Can they do it again this year?
One benefit to the BIR experience is that every ticket comes with a pit pass that allows guests to see the cars up close. See drivers and their teams tearing down and building up cars and get autographs from drivers. The experience is also described as carnival-like, with sponsors and vendors set up with merchandise, food, simulated competitions and interactive displays.
This Thursday through Saturday will also include evening fireworks displays, live bands and bonfires.
If you can't make it to this weekend's events, don't worry. There is plenty more going on at BIR, including high-speed driving schools, drag racing, proving grounds events and superbike races. Check out the events calendar for more.
