We are coming into the season of harvest and farmers markets are in full swing. Visit any of these local markets to find not just fresh produce but often also local honey, meats, baked goods and hand harvested wild rice- a Whitefish Chain staple.
Pine River hosts the Friday afternoon Market Square every Friday throughout the summer from 2:30-5:30 p.m. right next to the historic railroad depot just off Highway 371. The market continues through Sept. 25.
There's plenty of parking at the Pine River Welcome Center, which is also a nice visit (see Paul Bunyan's baby booties!) as is the historic depot, if it's open. If not, peek in the windows for a peek into area history.
The Pequot Lakes farmers market is taking place every Wednesday at It's A Wing Ding Thing on Government Drive in Pequot Lakes. This farmers market is the area's newest. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Government Drive, along with Main Street, hosts many of Pequot Lakes' favorite shopping spots.
Nisswa holds its weekly farmers market on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the American Legion parking lot. The Legion is just north of downtown Nisswa, so we recommend visiting both the farmers market and the downtown shops, which include boutiques, ice cream, coffee shops, restaurants and outdoor goods.
Ideal Corners (where the heck is it?! is the local running joke) has a weekly farmers market at the Ideal Green Market Cooperative every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September. You'll find vendors set up outside the cooperative market building, and inside the building is even more locally sourced and organic foods. It's worth checking out both! The Old Milwaukee Club, next door, is a local staple if you're in the mood for lunch.
The Lakes Area Growers Markets are the Brainerd and Baxter farmers markets (Nisswa's market is also a part of this organization). Though they are a little farther away from the Whitefish Chain, they are generally larger than the local markets (however, many of the same vendors attend both the Brainerd/Baxter markets and the more northerly markets listed above). These markets are open through October. The Brainerd Market is at the Franklin Arts Center on Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Baxter has a market from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Fridays at the Vikingland Harley Davidson.
