Fast Fun at the Ice Car Races

If you're looking for a great spectator sport for the weekend, head over to Big Pine Lake each Saturday in January and February. There you can watch as ice cars battle it out to be the fastest to round corners and cross the finish line on quite possibly the slipperiest course in racing!

Races take place every Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. on Big Pine Lake, which is located just southeast of the city of Crosslake. Races are completely free to spectators. You can reach the races from County Road 3 by turning east onto Big Pine Trail. Follow signs to the races.

You can also watch the races from the Cedar Chest, which has large picture windows looking out over the races. Cedar Chest is known for its burgers and broasted chicken, so lunch with a view is probably in order.

Ice racing classes include both rubber and studded tires as well as separate divisions for driver age groups. Competitors include both local drivers sponsored by area businesses and those who travel from out of town. The races will continue through February so long as ice conditions allow.
