As the days get longer and warmer, we here on the Whitefish Chain get more and more optimistic for summer- no matter how much we love winter! And while there's lots to do in every season on the chain, summer up here is simply legendary. Here's why:
Long Days on the Beach
At the height of summer, the Whitefish Chain area gets more than 16 hours of daylight, and that means long days to do whatever you want, but one of the best things to do is hang out on the beach. Chances are that your pick for lodging will have fantastic water access, and while you're on vacation the only thing you'll have to worry about as you soak up the warm rays is whether or not you put on enough sunscreen, and perhaps when to take another dip in the lake. With perfect sandy beaches and clean water, any of the many lakes of the Whitefish Chain is a great place to spend the day.
Fishing opener is May 11, and our neck of the woods here in Minnesota is known for fishing and boating. Hire a guide or pick up some bait and head out in your own boat. Rentals are also available- you can find everything you need on our fishing and boating page.
There's a fun family festival nearly every weekend in the summertime. Check out rare and classic boats at the Antique and Classic Wood Boat Rendezvous at Moonlite Bay. See giant bean pots pulled from the ground and get free beans at Bean Hole Days. See the parade and join in the festivities at Pine River's Summerfest. Try you hand at pit-spitting at the Pequot Lakes Chokecherry Festival.
Fun Weekly Events
If by chance you miss a festival, don't worry. There are a couple of fun events that go on every week! Head over to Pine River on Fridays in the summer and join in on the Duck Races. Several rounds are held, and at each round you "buy" a duck decoy which is ceremoniously dumped into the Pine River from the dam. The ducks then "race" to the finish line, where the winning duck is announced! Winners get fun prizes. In the end all the winning ducks and the "slow ducks" come together for a final heat. Duck Races begin June 21 and continue every Friday at 1:30 through the summer.
The Nisswa Turtle Races are another popular event. These races involve real turtles on a circular track! Bring your own turtle or use one of the provided turtles. Turtle races kick off June 5 and continues every Wednesday through the summer beginning at 1 p.m. $5 fee includes use of turtle and a button.
There's so much more to do in the summertime, too- from biking to kayaking, stand up paddleboarding or hiking through the woods. If you're on the Whitefish Chain, you're bound to have a great time. There's so much to look forward to this summer!
