Weekly Summertime Fun

Duck Races in Pine River are held every Friday!

Whenever you plan to visit the Whitefish Chain this summer, there are several weekly events that are held throughout the summer. Your family will love the Whitefish Chain's summer traditions!

Big Fun Tuesdays

When: Every Tuesday beginning June 19 from 1-3 p.m. through Aug. 14

Where: Crosslake Town Square

Every Tuesday, Crosslake Town Square hosts Big Fun Tuesdays, an afternoon of Paul Bunyan-sized fun. Events include gunny sack races in Paul's socks, minnow races in Paul's straws, the pancake toss, feed Paul beans (bean bag toss), face painting and much more! While you're in Town Square, check out some of the great local shops and have lunch. Every child gets a loot bag with candy and toys!

Nisswa Turtle Races

When: Every Wednesday, now through Aug. 22. Registration begins at 1 p.m.; racing begins at 2 p.m. and wraps up by 4 p.m.

Where: The Nisswa Turtle Track, just north of A&W in Nisswa.

Wednesdays are turtle racing days! This year marks the 55th year that Nisswa will host the weekly turtle races that draw spectators and participants from around the globe. It's $5 to race a turtle, which includes a pin and use of the turtle. (You can also bring your own turtle if you wish.)

The track is made up of three concentric circles- the widest being the spectator line. The innermost circle is where the racers start with their turtle in a bucket of water. When the "go" signal is given, the turtles are released and start to crawl for the middle circle, or the finish line. The turtle that gets there first is the winner!

Pine River Duck Races

When: Every Friday afternoon. Registration begins at 1:45 p.m. and races start at 2 p.m. The first race will be June 23 and they'll be held every Friday until Aug. 18.

Where: At the dam in Pine River, just a few blocks east of the Pine River stoplight at Hwy 371 (Barclay Avenue).

The Pine River Duck Races are another fun tradition held every Friday. A flock of duck decoys are brightly painted and emblazoned with a number. Pay $1 to get a numbered duck before the ducks are ceremoniously dumped from the dam into the river. They then float downstream to a group of volunteers, and the first duck to cross the finish line is the winner! Several rounds are held every Friday and participants are free to buy as many ducks as they would like. In exchange for entering you'll also receive a "duck buck" that is good for discounts around town.

Farmers' Markets

Even if you don't plan to do any cooking on your vacation on the Whitefish Chain, you'll still find amazing goods to take home or eat on the spot at local farmers' markets. Take home some hand-harvested, local wild rice that's better than any you've ever tasted, grab some local soap, honey and candles, or munch on some delicious baked goods made with love.

Saturdays: At the Ideal Green Market Cooperative parking lot in Ideal Corners, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Located just off Hwy 16 next to the Old Milwaukee Club.

Tuesdays: In Brainerd at the Franklin Arts Center from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Thursdays: In Nisswa in the American Legion parking lot, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. through October.

Fridays: In Pine River at the Pine River Market Square on Barclay Avenue, just a few blocks east of the Hwy. 371 stoplights. From 2:30-5:30 p.m. through Sept. 28.

Fridays: In Baxter at the Viking Land Harley-Davidson from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Nearly every day of the week, you'll find that there's something fun going on around the Whitefish Chain! In addition to these recurring events there are tons of local events held throughout the summer. Check out our events page for more.
